Chapter 10

A blackened shell stood where the youth center had once been. Angie battled the rage back as she followed Penelope through a cleared section. Volunteers, mostly from the community, worked alongside Counterstrike and Arsenal personnel. Off-duty firefighters from Penelope’s division directed the cleanup while Quint and other off-duty police helped.

Mack, Mickie, and the other women she’d met yesterday had set up a drink station with cold bottled waters, sodas, and snacks. Several people dropped off eats at the area before checking in with a tall, handsome name named Moose.

Penelope’s man.

Angie stifled the grin that threatened whenever she looked at the miniature donkey plodding alongside the woman. Smokey brayed whenever the woman wandered off too far. He set his boot-covered feet wherever Penelope stepped.

So cute.

“That ought to do it.” Penelope leaned over and taped down a yellow flag. “There. We should be clear for Ethan’s crew to do their thing.”

Ethan’s crew was a demolition company he’d contracted hours ago—one that’d come with enough equipment to level the entire neighborhood. Angie looked over at who she thought was Ethan. Or was that Milo?

Penelope followed her gaze.

“That’s Milo.”

“How the hell can you tell?”

“The dragon. Ethan’s is red. Milo’s is green.” The woman shrugged. “I can’t take credit. Marisol pointed it out to me the first time I met them.” The woman patted Smokey. “You’re good with them. The kids.”

“They’re good kids.” And they were. They’d pitched in and done the bulk of the heavy lifting of the debris before the demolition crew took over. “I was too far away to hear what Ethan said. What’s the plan? Are they rebuilding?”

Penelope chuckled. “That man never chooses the easy path, not when others benefit from the more challenging one.” She pointed at the three-story building across a large parking lot. “That’s the new community center, or will be once everything’s done. This is a basketball court. I think.”

That explained why so many people were inside the three-story structure. Angie watched as Twitch and another man carried large piles of things from the building and tossed it onto a growing pile.

“Wow, that’s impressive,” Angie mumbled. It was hard not to admire the way Twitch’s muscles bunched and flexed. His skin glistened in the sunlight—a fact that she noticed because he and several of the men laboring in the building had removed their shirts.

News vans parked alongside the narrow road drew her attention. So far, she’d avoided them, mainly because Twitch and the other operatives never let the cameramen stray near her. Unease pricked her skin, though. She didn’t want to get caught on video.

“You’re pretty impressive, you know. Coming out here despite everything happening.” Penelope paused her progression back to the parking lot. “Mack mentioned you were having troubles. If you need anything, let me know.”

“Thanks.”

Angie followed the woman as she headed toward the three-story building. Moose smiled and closed the distance. The two shared a brief kiss. The woman turned and smiled.

“This is Angie.”

“Ah. Yes, I heard all about you this morning after Penelope here practiced a move Mack taught her via text.
